A.M. UPDATE: Three Rivers History Explorers to explore Muskogee's participation in Spanish-American War on Tuesday

On June 22, 1898, Teddy Roosevelt and his Rough Riders landed in Cuba and their story of the Spanish-American War unfolded. Oklahoma businessmen, students, cowboys and Native Americans had signed up and been sworn in to Troops L and M in early May that year when the Secretary of War assigned U.S. District Judge John R. Thomas the duty of recruitment in Indian Territory.

The participation of the young men of Indian Territory in this event will be the program when the Three Rivers Museum's History Explorers meet ay 7 p.m. Tuesday at the museum, 220 Elgin. After a short program at the museum, the group will travel by trolley to the Thomas-Foreman Historic Home where they will meet Roosevelt himself as well as Miss Alice Robertson, who will tell their own stories about the Spanish American War.

The home's exhibit of war artifacts belonging to John R. Thomas, Jr. who took command of Troop L after the death of Captain Capron during the battle of Las Guasimas, will be available for viewing.
