Warner eighth-grader’s essay on governing takes top prize

OKLAHOMA CITY — A Warner High School student read her essay at this year’s Municipal Government Day at the Oklahoma State Capitol on Monday.

Callie Glisson took first place in this year’s “If I Were Mayor...” essay contest. Second place went to Jeff Downes, a student at Catholic School of St. Eugene in Oklahoma City. Third place went to Kagen Dunivan of Perkins-Tryon Middle School in Perkins.

This year, more than 480 essays were received written by eighth-grade students from 24 different schools from across the state, according to a media release from the Oklahoma Municipal League and the Mayors Council of Oklahoma.

The winning student essays offered innovative ideas to bring tourism and attract business development to their communities. One student envisioned an open government working for its citizens and encouraged inviting citizens to offer their input to help their community flourish.

“This type of forward thinking could help bring us out of the economic downturn our communities face presently,” said Carolyn Stager, OML executive director. “It is very encouraging to see the imaginations of our students today, for they will be our leaders of tomorrow.”

The week of March 10 to 14 is designated as Municipal Government Week in Oklahoma. During the week, municipalities statewide will celebrate their communities and share with their citizens the work it takes to make a city or town run effectively and efficiently.

During Municipal Government Week, citizens are encouraged to speak to council members and trustees to express their concerns and appreciation, participate in a local community event or attend a city council meeting.
