Colon Cancer Awareness month

March is National Colorectal (Colon) Cancer Awareness month.

The American Cancer Society estimates nearly 150,000 Americans are diagnosed with colon cancer every year, and 50,000 die from this disease. This cancer is preventable through recommended screenings and is often beatable when detected and treated in its early stages. according to a media release.

• Colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States.

• 90 percent of new cases occur in people 50 or older.

• Screenings can find polyps that could turn in to cancer.

“Patients over the age of 50 should ask for a colorectal cancer screening. To be an effective partner in their health care, patients should follow the advice of their physician. It’s important to complete the at-home steps of colorectal cancer screenings and bring the three cards with them when returning for the follow up appointment,” said Dr. Kenneth Gibson, NeoHealth medical director.
