A man found dead in a residence south of Okay early Wednesday morning had broken into the house before being killed, officials said.
Wagoner County Sheriff’s Office Major Gary Handley said Michael Shane Smith, 38, was killed during an altercation at a house near the Wybark area. Officials said Smith gained access to the house, which his ex-wife was staying at, by climbing in through a window.
Once inside, Smith got into an altercation with a man who was inside the house, Handley said. The Office of the State Medical Examiner’s report on the death isn’t finished, but Handley said “edge weapons” were involved in the death.
“We don’t know how many times he was stabbed yet,” Handley said. “We’re still waiting on the report. There are still so many things up in the air.”
Handley said neither Smith’s ex-wife nor the man were placed into custody. The sheriff’s office is looking into whether there were previous domestic disturbances between Smith, who Handley said lives in Stillwater, and his ex-wife.
Handley said the address where the death occurred and the names of the ex-wife and male resident were not being released Wednesday “as a protective measure.”
Smith had been charged multiple times in Muskogee County and was set to return to court Dec. 13 for a revocation hearing for a domestic assault and battery charge. He had been convicted on that charge Nov. 18.
Handley said the sheriff’s office considers the investigation ongoing.
