Club celebrates local woman, 9 others

Barbara McAlister of Muskogee is one of 10 outstanding women being honored by the Oklahoma Hospitality Club.

The club is celebrating 91 years of service to the community by honoring women who have made a difference in the lives of others through their careers and community service. The Ladies in the News luncheon and style show will feature fashions from Ruth Meyers and will be held April 11 at the Oklahoma City Golf and Country Club.

Proceeds from the event will fund grants for nonprofit agencies that are chosen by the membership vote. This year’s grants will go the Urban Mission Inc. and D-Dent Inc.

McAlister, an internationally acclaimed dramatic mezzo-soprano, enrolled member of the Cherokee Nation, and 2013 inductee into the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame, has performed in many American and European opera houses during her 40-year career. McAlister grew up in Muskogee, where as a teenager loved riding her horse and even barrel raced in local rodeos. Hailing from a musically talented family, Barbara grew up with music and singing.
