Application period opens for Trail of Tears bike ride

— The Cherokee Nation is accepting applications from students for the 2013 Remember the Removal Bike Ride, a journey that takes participants across seven states to experience what is commonly known as the Trail of Tears. The three-week trek begins the first week of June. Applications must be submitted by March 22.

The ride begins in New Echota, Ga., and will follow the northern route of the Trail of Tears, ending in Oklahoma. The 950-mile route goes through Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky, Illinois, Missouri, Arkansas and Oklahoma. Participants will travel an average of 60 miles a day.

Ride applicants must be ages 16 to 24, a Cherokee Nation citizen and a student in high school or college. They must provide background and health information and submit a personal essay.

Riders must provide their clothes, bedding, toiletries and expense money. The Cherokee Nation will provide meals, bicycles, biking gear, GPS and lodging. Participants must be dedicated to training for the ride, both individually and as a group, and to completing the journey.
