Burger cooking contest open to youths

— Chili pots and barbecue smokers won’t be involved in Muskogee’s big cook-off April 13.

Young people can try their skills at cooking burgers at the Muskogee Chillin’ + Grillin’ Youth Cook-off. It is sponsored by the Muskogee County Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service.

“We want to provide an opportunity for youth and their families to participate in the cook-off,” said Extension Educator David Adams of the Muskogee County extension. The Muskogee Exchange Club will have its 29th Annual Chili and Barbecue Cook-Off the same day.

The hamburger cook-off is open to teams of two or three members. Contestants can enter in two age groups— third through eighth grade and ninth through 12th grade. Each team also must have an adult to monitor safety.

Deadline for early registration is Friday, with a fee of $10. Late registration will be taken through 4:30 p.m. April 12; the fee is $15.

Oktaha Elementary sixth-grader Georgia Perry said she was looking forward to the cook-off.

Georgia said the most fun part could be to “just hang out with friends.”

She said she and her teammate have a secret to winning: Hidden Valley Ranch dressing. She’s been cooking for two years — her best dish is spaghetti — but she has not had too much experience with hamburgers, she said.

Teams need to bring their equipment, including grills and cooking utensils. They also must provide their seasonings, sauce and other ingredients, the meat will be supplied.

 Adams said he expects about 10 to 12 teams. Kids do not need to belong to a 4-H Club to enter, he said.

The rule sheet says the burgers will be judged on appearance, aroma, tenderness, taste and aftertaste. Teams will have two minutes to make a presentation for the judges.

The Chillin’ + Grillin’ cook-off will be in the Kids Zone area of the Muskogee Exchange Club’s annual Chili and Barbecue Cook-off. However, unlike the chili and barbecue cook-off, the hamburgers will not be available for the public to taste.
