A retired Vietnam-era veteran from Tahlequah will be presented with the Purple Heart during a ceremony scheduled April 19.
U.S. Rep. Markwayne Mullin of Oklahoma’s 2nd Congressional District will present the medal to Paul Phillips. The former chief petty officer served with the U.S. Navy Seabees in Vietnam.
Phillips earned the Purple Heart, an honor bestowed upon those who were wounded or killed during military service after April 5, 1917, when he was injured in a building explosion. Phillips sustained burns to 29 percent of his body and spent a year and a half in the hospital before returning to Vietnam.
The presentation ceremony is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. April 19 at Go Ye Village, 1201 W. Fourth St., in Tahlequah. The ceremony will include a tribute to all military veterans, who are encouraged to attend and be recognized. The public is invited as well.
