College introduction class coming to Hilldale

Connors course a pilot program

— Connors State College will have a “Strategies for Success” class at Hilldale High School this year.

“The idea is to introduce the concept of college to students,” said Ron Ramming, Connors’ vice president of academic affairs. “They’d learn how to find resources to help them, learn time management, what college entails.”

The concurrent-enrollment class offers three hours of college credit. It will be open to Hilldale juniors and seniors.

Class teacher Lisa Wade Raasch said she hopes to help students “develop habits and skills to help them succeed in college.”

“I also want to help students identify barriers that could get in the way from them being successful,” Raasch said. “With the concurrent enrollment, we hope to encourage students to see college as an option.”

Hilldale Principal Deborah Tennison said having the class on campus would be  convenient for Hilldale students.

“With us having the class, we’re not losing an hour with students driving to Connors,” she said.

Ramming said Connors is not yet offering the class at other high schools.

“Hilldale will be our pilot,” he said. “We will need to refine the curriculum. It has potential.”

As with Connors’ other concurrent-enrollment classes, tuition will be waived, but students still will pay for fees and textbooks related to the class, Ramming said.
