Whittier events raise funds, Alzheimer’s awareness

Whittier Elementary held its annual Alzheimer’s Awareness activities Thursday and Friday, including the ’80s for Alzheimer’s Dance and Paint the Playground Purple Day.

Whittier Elementary is a close-knit family of students and staff, according to a media release. When one of its teachers was affected by her father’s diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease, the staff and students sprang into action.

The ’80s for Alzheimer’s Dance was organized with the funds going to the Alzheimer’s Association. What started as a one-time event to support a teacher is now in its fifth year. Staff and students look forward to the tradition every year.

The goal has become not only to help the Alzheimer’s Association but to foster an understanding for the students of what a far-reaching effect the disease has and how many are touched by it, the release states.

Before the dance, students do research about the disease and what steps are being taken to find a cure.

After the dance, students reflect and write about how they are making a difference by participating in the dance.

Every year, the school “Paints the Playground Purple” on the school day closest to Sept. 21, which is World Alzheimer’s Awareness Day. Everyone dresses in purple and gathers on the playground for an all-school photograph.

Whittier has taken on this cause with the belief that its students are someday going to be leaders in finding a cure for this disease.
