Tomboy homecoming queen

— Being named 2013 Hilldale Football homecoming queen caught Kambri Martinez by surprise.

“I’ve always been the tomboy,” she said after Friday afternoon’s coronation. “I liked hanging out with all the guys, playing football.”

“Fishing, riding four-wheelers,” said her mother Dalonda Martinez.

Look at that tomboy now.

Kambri glistened Friday in her white bare-shouldered gown, the bodice studded with rhinestones.

Kambri, who was told she was queen two weeks ago, said it was hard finding a dress.

“I’m too picky,” she said.

Kambri said she would wear the white gown again Friday night early in Hilldale’s home game against Inola. She said she would to change after the first quarter. Kambri is an athletic trainer with the football team.

“I help with the water, taping ankles and wrists,” she said, “I’ll have to change so I can go to do my job.”

Kambri has been a football trainer for two years. She also has been in the student council for two years. She served as junior class secretary, treasurer and executive secretary.

In her biography, announced during the coronation, Kambri said she wanted to go to college “marry the man of my dreams and have two rock star football players.”

Escort Drew Vandiver expressed similar ambitions. In his biography, he said he wanted to have “two kids who WILL grow up to be linemen.”

Vandiver has been in the student council and is the senior class president. He enjoys hunting, fishing and “hanging out with the guys.”

Friday’s coronation might have set the record for Hilldale’s youngest homecoming flower girl — 5-month-old Bethaneigh Rice.

The tot had to be pulled onto the homecoming stage in a wagon. Crown-bearer Kristopher Gonzalez, 4, pulled the wagon, which also held the crowns for Kambri and Drew.

Bethaneigh slept through the whole ceremony.

“I thought she was sleeping beauty,” said the girl’s mother, Tiffany Rice. “She fell asleep right before she came on stage.”

Rice said she had known Kambri and her family for a long time.

Kambri said Rice had asked her if Bethaneigh could be the flower girl. Kambri agreed.

“It’s cute,” she said. “It’s different.”
