Well, I’m proud to be... ‘True’ or ‘transplanted,’ Okies celebrate Muskogee

Couple going strong after 63 years of marriage

After 63 years of marriage, Richard and Annette remain very much in love. But then, neither of them is the kind of person who easily tires of things around them.

They’ve lived in Muskogee for more than half a century and love it.

And they’ve lived in their house for 45 years and wouldn’t dream of moving.

Part of that is because their house is so much of everything they wanted when they had it built. It’s very open and they use every room in the house.

Annette Adkins had taken some architecture classes in college and was living in a fairly new and almost-paid-for house at Palmer Pond in Honor Heights. One day in 1959 she was looking through a House Beautiful magazine that centered on architect Frank Lloyd Wright’s life. It also featured a few of his protégés, including Fay Jones of Fayetteville, Ark.

She looked at the photos of his work and “fell in love” with his designs.

When Richard came home, she told him she wanted to build a new house.

“Ohhhhh,” she quotes him as having said at the time. “But a wonderful husband like him went along with it.”

She still has the House Beautiful magazine and a thick book on Jones on her coffee table.

Their house is one of 135 residences Jones designed during his lifetime. He also designed 15 chapels and churches in 20 states.

Annette Adkins said she wanted a house where she could use every room and while those uses have changed some over time, that’s still what she does.

What used to be the daughter’s bedroom is now her art studio and his office. The guest bedroom — unless they have guests — is open into their bedroom.

The master bedroom and living room both look out into garden spaces.
