Woman plans to witness historic moment

A Wagoner woman who will be attending the presidential inauguration next month expects it to be a grand, historic party, but one with a somber side.

“I’m elated and overjoyed just to actually be going,” said Denise Hickman, an employee of the Muskogee Parks and Recreation Department.

She will be driving to the Washington, D.C., area, where she has relatives she will stay with while there. U.S. Rep. Dan Boren, D-Okla., has helped her obtain tickets to the event.

This won’t be Hickman’s first trip to D.C. She lived there during her youth and remembers attending the Easter Egg Hunt on the White House Lawn. She doesn’t remember enough about that experience to be sure who was president at the time. She thinks it was Jimmy Carter.

But she’ll never forget the details of this trip, Hickman says.

She feels a kinship with Barack Obama in that she said she has always tried to be a community servant just as he has.

“My sense of wanting to become a better American has been rejuvenated,” she said. “With so many challenges we’ve all been facing, I’m looking forward to cohesiveness that is bipartisan and crosses socioeconomic and racial lines.”

She said she expects Obama’s impact to not only be nationwide, but also worldwide.

For Hickman, the inauguration will be part of a three day celebration: Martin Luther King Day on Jan. 19; the inauguration on Jan. 20; and her 39th birthday on Jan. 20.

Attending the inauguration

• Muskogee Mayor John Tyler Hammons, who will be attending the National Mayor’s Conference.

• D’Elbie Walker of Muskogee.

• Calvin and Joyce Rock of Muskogee.
