Free vaccinations this morning could help area adults say “Boo on the Flu.”
The annual flu shot clinic, Boo on the Flu, will begin at 8 a.m. at Honor Heights Park. People drive down Honor Heights Drive and receive their shots while in their cars.
Although the event begins at 8 a.m., many patients arrive early, said Ched Wetz, director of compliance and risk management at EASTAR Health System.
“We arrive at 7 or 7:30 a.m., and people will be lined up,” Wetz said. “We stop them right at the base of the hill.”
Wetz said, “We’ll start giving shots as soon as we get lanes set up and we can see the patients.”
Patients are to drive down Honor Heights Drive to the clinic in the park, which will be set up in the parking lot by the Papilion, Wetz said. They exit at 48th Street.
“They sign a consent form explaining the flu shot, then move up and give the consent form to a nurse, who gives a shot. At the third venue we’ll check on them and give them a packet of candy,” Wetz said.
He said the patient may give a donation, but it is not necessary. The donations are split between “Boo” sponsors, the Muskogee Medical Foundation and the EASTAR Auxiliary, he said.
About 1,200 doses are available and will be given on a first come-first, served basis. Patients must be 18 or older and are asked to wear loose-fitting clothing to allow access to the arm.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends a yearly flu vaccine as the most important step in protecting against the flu. The CDC website says timing of the flu varies from year to year. Flu activity commonly peaks in January or February, but can begin as early as October.
“Getting the flu vaccine as soon as it becomes available each year is always a good idea,” the website says.
Boo on the Flu is sponsored by EASTAR Health System Auxiliary, Muskogee Medical Foundation, EASTAR Health System, Muskogee County Emergency Medical Service and Muskogee Parks and Recreation. Other sponsors are Muskogee City and County Emergency Management, Muskogee County Health Department, Oklahoma State University Institute of Technology, Little Caesar’s Pizza and Love Bottling Company.
