Man runs coast-to-coast to raise awareness of Alzheimer’s

Jack Fussell is running from the east coast to the west coast to raise money and awareness about Alzheimer’s disease.

Fussell, 62, of Canton, Ga., has run through Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Arkansas, and made a stop Thursday at Magnolia Gardens, 3211 Chandler Road.

He left Skidaway Island State Park in Savannah, Ga., on Jan. 12 and will continue until he reaches Monterey, Calif. He estimates the approximately 3,500-mile trip will take eight to 10 months.

Fussell is not only running in memory of his father, whom he lost to Alzheimer’s disease in 2000, but also as a celebration of his own life. Also, six of his father’s siblings succumbed to Alzheimer's.

After losing more than 100 pounds, Fussell decided he was going to run across the country to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Association. He has set a fundraising goal of $250,000.

Fussell is running with the goal of averaging 15 to 20 miles a day. He said his longest day so far is 34 miles. Fussell does not have anyone following him on this trip. He is traveling with his personal jogging stroller loaded with his supplies and camping gear.

Through the kindness of people he has met, he has only had to camp one night.

As of May 1, Fussell has run 1,250 miles and raised more than $18,500.

During a stop in Statesboro, Ga., Fussell was taken to a assisted living center. He was so motivated and inspired by the caregivers and residents, he decided that stopping at assisted living centers and memory care units would become a part of his journey.
