Three on Phoenix staff win awards for writing

— NORMAN — Three Muskogee Phoenix staff members won first-place awards in the 2012 Associated Press/Oklahoma News Executive contest.

D.E. Smoot won first in the general news category for his story on the 10th anniversary of the Interstate 40 bridge collapse in Webbers Falls.

Mike Kays won first in the sports feature category for his story on Negro League player Porter Reed. Kays also won second place in sports column.

Ed Choate won first in editorial writing.

The Phoenix also placed second in general excellence in the medium-sized newspapers category.

The newspapers were judged based on total content over a period of three consecutive days selected at random during calendar year 2012.

The AP/Oklahoma News Executives competition is open to newspapers that are regular members of The Associated Press news cooperative. The competition attracted more than 600 entries across 20 writing and photography categories.

The awards were announced Saturday.
