Man charged with kidnapping returned

A Muskogee man accused of removing his teenage son from a foster home has been returned to Muskogee County and appeared in court Friday afternoon.

James Carl Powell, 48, is charged with kidnapping and is being held in the Muskogee County/City Detention Facility on $250,000 bond.

Authorities say that last month Powell removed his son, Austin Powell, 16, from a foster home while James Powell’s custodial rights were restricted to supervised visitation.

Police located them in Bad Axe, Mich.

Powell was arrested and booked into the Huron County Jail in Michigan. Powell was returned to Muskogee Thursday, said Brandon Caster, chief deputy with the Muskogee County Sheriff’s Office.

Powell will be in court May 9 at which time a date will be set for a preliminary hearing.
