Man dies in fiery crash

Vehicle ran off US 69, landed in ravine

OKTAHA — A man died in a fiery wreck south of Oktaha early Wednesday morning.

The crash occurred just before 9 a.m. in between the northbound and southbound bridges over Anderson Creek on U.S. 69, about three-fourths of a mile south of Oktaha. No other vehicles were involved.

The name of the driver has not been released.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol Trooper Robert Francis said the vehicle was heading south on U.S. 69 when, for an unknown reason, it ran off the road. The vehicle traveled more than 100 feet before vaulting and dropping more than 20 feet into a ravine. The vehicle became engulfed in flames on impact.

The ground was blackened with burnt grass and brush where the vehicle came to rest. The scent of burning metal was heavy in the air as the Oktaha Fire Department worked to extinguish the fire. Both northbound and southbound traffic slowed to under 20 mph near the crash site.

The vehicle was in three pieces at the bottom of the southern embankment between the two bridges, not visible to passing traffic.
