— Tahlequah police have made an arrest in the shooting death of an unidentified man early Sunday.

Juan Carlos Caballero, 29, is being held at the Cherokee County Detention Center on complaints of first-degree murder and possession of a controlled dangerous substance, according to a media release from Tahlequah Police Chief Nate King.

Police responded about 12:30 a.m. Sunday to a report of a shooting at a house in the 200 block of Basin Street.

Several law enforcement agencies assisted Tahlequah police in apprehending Caballero at the house.

While they were clearing the house, police found the dead man’s body.

The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation is assisting Tahlequah police by processing the crime scene, according to the media release.

King said it appears the cause of death is a gunshot wound, but that has not yet been confirmed by the state medical examiner.

A second person at the house was also arrested.

The media release states Caballero’s girlfriend, Liliana Landaverde, whose age was unavailable, is also being held at the Cherokee County Detention Center on one complaint of possession of a controlled dangerous substance and one complaint of failure to protect a minor child.

Tahlequah Police Detective Chris Boals is leading the investigation, King said.

According to court records, a Juan Carlos Caballero who is listed as living at the same address as the shooting scene has several traffic tickets. No misdemeanor or felony records are found.

A conviction of first-degree murder carries a sentence of either life, life without parole or death.
