MPS preps disaster plan

Flip chart could offer emergency plans at teacher’s fingertips

Teachers in Muskogee Public Schools could hang a concise emergency plan by their doors next school year.

The district is preparing a bound spiral flip chart detailing MPS emergency preparedness procedures for the 2015 school year. MPS Maintenance and Facilities Director Wayne Johnson said the 16-card flip charts would go in each school classroom. He estimated about 580 flip charts would be made.

“When you look at the disaster plan, it will be short and simple,” Johnson said. “We wanted to put together a document that can hang in the school building. This document can be taken out of as a class leaves a building.”

Johnson showed a draft of the flip chart to the MPS Board of Education at its regular meeting Tuesday. The plan was not subject to a board vote.

Johnson said the flip chart includes material in the district’s 45-page disaster plan.

“In some points, this is easier and more in-depth,” Johnson said.

For example, the flip chart has a more in-depth list of people to call in case of an emergency.

“It is a more responsive list,” he said.

The flip chart details procedures for such emergencies as an off-campus car wreck or bus wreck, accidents during field trips, intruders in school buildings, bomb threats, fires, explosions or tornados. The chart also has an action plan for a school crisis team.

Most of the procedures in the flip chart are not new, Johnson said.

However, one change alters what is said in case of a lockdown or bomb threat, he said.

“We will use plain English,” Johnson said. “We had used code words such as ‘code red’ or ‘code blue.’”

Johnson said a few changes must be made to the final draft before it is submitted to the printer. He said the flip chart should be ready for schools by the start of the 2015 school year.
