Three arrested after drug search

Muskogee police arrested three men Monday after serving a search warrant at a home in an Honor Heights-area neighborhood.

Officer Danny Dupont identified the three men arrested at the home as Adrian Shipp, 22, Courtney Hutchinson, 23, and Berron Newton, 28. Shipp was arrested on an outstanding warrant connected to a civil matter, and Hutchinson was jailed on a misdemeanor complaint of marijuana possession. Newton was booked into jail on a felony complaint of possessing marijuana with intent to distribute.

“There were children in the home, ages 7 and 4,” Dupont said, adding that five adults were at the house when law enforcers executed the warrant. “The Department of Human Resources was called, but no decision has been made about the placement of those children.”

Law enforcers said the search turned up about four ounces of marijuana and some scales. The arrests, drug and paraphernalia seizures capped a two-week investigation. Lt. Andy Simmons said the marijuana was valued at approximately $400.

Simmons said the Special Investigations Unit executed the warrant about noon.

“We got here and made contact with a lady and within seconds after we announced the warrant, one guy jumped out a window and attempted to flee,” Simmons said about Shipp. “We were able to apprehend him, and two more people inside the house were also arrested.”

Simmons said police received a tip about two weeks ago alleging suspicious activity at the northwest Muskogee residence. Investigators were able to gather enough information to secure a search warrant.

Steve Whittenberg, a next-door neighbor, said he had been suspicious for some time about the volume of traffic in and out of the house. Whittenberg said he had no problems with the people who began renting the house shortly after Christmas in 2006, just “the company that comes in and out of there.”

“There is just too much traffic going through that house,” Whittenberg said. “There’s less traffic at the bus station downtown.”

The three men were being held in the Muskogee County/City Detention Facility. They are expected to make an initial court appearance this afternoon.
