Garvin elected to Cherokee council seat

Margin of victory slightly more than 1 percent

— The winner of the Cherokee Nation’s Tribal Council runoff election Saturday and eight more tribal councilors will be inaugurated in mid-August, according to a media release.

Don Garvin narrowly took the lead Saturday in the District 4 runoff election, with 352 votes, or 50.6 percent.

His opponent, Mike Dobbins, received 344 votes, or 49.4 percent.

Nearly 700 of the eligible 2,496 Cherokee Nation citizens in District 4, including absentee voters, cast ballots Saturday, the release states.

The result of the election are expected to be certified by Tuesday.

The inauguration ceremony of all nine new or returning councilors will begin at 2 p.m. Aug. 14 at the Place Where They Play on Sequoyah School’s campus in Tahlequah.

The other winners to be inaugurated are:

• Jack D. Baker, at-large.

• Joe Byrd, District 2.

• David W. Thornton Sr., District 5.

• Frankie Hargis, District 7.

• Curtis G. Snell, District 9.

• Harley L. Buzzard, District 10.

• Janees Taylor, District 15.

• Chuck Hoskin Jr., District 11.

District 4 was the only seat to go to a runoff after the June 22 election.

In that election, Garvin received 43.80 percent of the vote, Dobbins got 34.58 percent and Justin E. Carlton received 21.61 percent. The voter turnout was 694.

FAMILY: Wife, Jo Elaine, one daughter, two granddaughters and two great-granddaughters.

OCCUPATION: Cherokee Nation tribal councilor.

EDUCATION: Central High School, Oklahoma State University. Master’s degree from Southeastern State University. Served in the Air Force Reserves, attaining the rank of captain.

RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION: Central Baptist Church.

HOBBIES: Jogging, yard work, reading.
