Suspect in child's shooting jailed

Man surrenders at police headquarters

— A man named as a suspect in a shooting that injured a 5-year-old boy turned himself in to police Monday evening, police said.

Police had identified Kenneth Wayne Jones, 20, as a suspect in the Saturday night shooting, Police Cpl. Michael Mahan said.

Jones turned himself in about 8:15 p.m. Monday. He showed up at the front desk of the Muskogee Police Department and surrendered without incident. He was booked into the Muskogee County/City Detention Facility on one count of assault with a deadly weapon, Mahan said.

Jones is suspected of shooting at the back of a silver car about 11:30 p.m. Saturday at Whispering Pines Apartments on Fairmont Street. The child was a passenger in the car.

An anonymous caller called 911 and told dispatchers she heard five shots fired and heard a car drive away, but didn’t see anything, according to 911 call logs.

The call logs also show it was about five minutes after police arrived that dispatchers received a call from officials at EASTAR Health System saying that a small child with a gunshot wound was in the emergency room.

The boy is now at a Tulsa hospital and doing well, Mahan said.

“They said he is in good condition, alert and talking,” he said.

Online court records show an arrest warrant was issued Monday for assault with a deadly weapon. He had another warrant for his arrest for a misdemeanor charge of assault and battery that was issued in June 2012.

The call logs also show it was the fourth time since Friday evening that police had been called to the apartment complex for disturbances.

Among the 911 call logs:

• 11 p.m. Friday — A caller said that a large crowd had gathered just inside the entrance of the apartment complex and several people were yelling at each other. Call logs state that police were unable to locate anyone when they arrived.

• 11:54 p.m. Friday — A caller asked for police to intervene in another disturbance. Police contacted several people at the apartment complex on that call, and one person was arrested on misdemeanor warrants, the logs state.

• 11 p.m. Saturday — A caller, who did not give a name, said a large crowd was standing outside near the office drinking and arguing. The log notes do not indicate what happened when officers responded.

About 30 minutes later, officers received the shots fired call.

Mahan said he does not yet have information on whether any of the previous disturbances on Friday and Saturday are related to the shooting.
