Investigators are working to discover how a Vian man ended up dead in a pond in southern Muskogee County, an official said.

The body was identified Tuesday as David Dewayne Lewis, 50, of Vian, said Muskogee County Sheriff’s Investigator Coletta Peyton.

“We don’t know how he got there, but we are investigating it as a suspicious death unless the medical examiner advises us otherwise,” she said.

Peyton said, to her knowledge, Lewis had not been reported missing.

A little boy was planning to go fishing at a private pond west of Webbers Falls and south of Interstate 40 on Sunday afternoon when he discovered Lewis.

“He walked over the pond dam and saw the body floating in the pond,” Peyton said.

According to Department of Corrections records, Lewis has numerous convictions dating back to 1995 in Cherokee and Sequoyah counties that include eluding a police officer, possession of a controlled substance, feloniously carrying a firearm, burglary, and bogus checks.

Lewis’ latest conviction, according to court records, was on a 2011 aggravated assault and battery case in Sequoyah County. He received a five-year suspended sentence in that case in January.

Peyton said anyone with information about Lewis’ death can contact the Sheriff’s Department, (918) 687-1275.
