Former fire chief released on bond

A former Cherokee County volunteer fire chief was booked into jail Monday on forgery and embezzlement charges.

Roger Dale Fine, 54, is charged with 16 counts of delivery of a forged note or instrument and one count of embezzlement, according to an indictment issued Thursday by a multicounty grand jury.

He turned himself in and was freed from the Cherokee County Detention Facility on $1,000 bond, a spokeswoman said.

Fine is accused of forging signatures on the fire department’s bank account.

Fine was the fire chief of the Peggs Volunteer Fire Department and a Cherokee County sheriff’s deputy.

He has been suspended as a deputy.

No court date has been set.
