Wagoner man held after lengthy police chase

Suspect arrested after alleged carjacking in Tulsa, fleeing officers

A Wagoner man is in jail after allegedly stealing a car in Tulsa at gunpoint and leading Wagoner Police Department officers on a lengthy chase.

Wagoner Police Department Chief Bob Haley said Larry Gene Cotton Jr., 25, was arrested just before midnight Wednesday. Wagoner Officer James Powell, unaware Cotton had allegedly stolen the vehicle at gunpoint hours earlier, attempted to make a traffic stop, Haley said.

The pursuit went through downtown Wagoner and through some neighborhoods before Cotton led officers toward Coweta.

“(Cotton) blew through eight or nine stop signs,” Haley said. “He ran through a red light at (U.S.) 69 and (Oklahoma) 51, and almost hit a truck.”

Haley said the Oklahoma Highway Patrol and Coweta Police Department set up a roadblock on Oklahoma 51, and Cotton’s vehicle hit a spike strip, but didn’t immediately stop.

“He kept going for a while. His tires on the driver’s side were on their rims,” Haley said. “He was taken into custody and Officer Powell attempted to find out if that vehicle had been involved in any other incidents.

“That’s when the Tulsa Police Department contacted us and said it had been involved in Tulsa in a carjacking.”

Haley said Powell noticed Cotton throwing something out of his window during the initial chase. When other officers searched that area, they discovered what they believe is the weapon Cotton used in the alleged carjacking.

Cotton was charged last year with:

• Eluding/attempting to elude police officer.

• Assault and batter.

• Driving under suspension.

Cotton is set for the May 9 criminal docket in Wagoner County for the charges from last year.

Cotton was convicted in 2007 of possession of controlled drug and larceny of automobile in Tulsa County. He was sentenced to five years in prison and was released Nov. 4, 2011.
