Swon Brothers advance on NBC’s ‘The Voice’

Local musicians move on to Top 10

“Just say it” people muttered Tuesday night as they waited to hear if the Swon Brothers made the Top 10 performers in “The Voice.”

Show host Carson Daly said it and dozens at the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame’s watch party erupted in cheers Zach and Colton Swon, the musical brothers from Muskogee advanced yet another round of the NBC musical reality show “The Voice.”

“America, thank you so much,” Colton said during the show. “God bless you. We cannot believe it.”

Racie Jackson, who is Zach Swon’s girlfriend, said she expected it.

“This is the first time I watched and I’ve not been nervous,” Jackson said. “It’s the first time, I felt okay, like I knew they were going to do it.”

Colton Swon’s girlfriend, Lacey Lashley also felt confident. She said she tracked the Swon Brothers’ popularity on digital music and video app.

“I checked iTunes last night and on the country charts and they had made it to No. 4,” Lashley said.

It didn’t take long for Jackson and Lashley to have their confidence confirmed. The brothers were the second act to make the Top 10 that night. If they keep making the cut, they could appear on “The Voice” finale in mid-June.

Jackson said Zach and Colton have been gone “since Easter day.”

She said Zach Swon is “very dedicated” to performing.

“He never wanted to do anything else,” she said. “All he wants is him and his brother to do something together.”

That’s why Zach Swon chose not to go on the “American Idol” show like Colton did, she said.

Most of those attending Tuesday’s watch party attend New Hope Assembly of God, where the brothers had served on the praise and worship team. They cheered for the Swons’ success, even though it could mean the brothers will spend more time away from their church.

“When they win, we’re going to lose them,” church member Glenna Murr said. “We don’t want to lose them, but this is what we want for them.”

“We want them to be successful,” said her husband, Jerry Murr.

Andrea Roach said she has been on the praise and worship team with the Swons for 15 years.

“Zach played keyboards and sang, Colton played bass and sang. I sang,” Roach said. “We had three vocalists, Zach, Colton, a drummer and a guitar player. Every summer we lead worship.”

She said the Swons made a huge impact on the church.

“They are definitely rooted and grounded in the church,” Roach said. “That’s definitely where their feet are planted.”

The Swons also are rooted in country music. Country star Blake Shelton, their celebrity coach for “The Voice,” confirmed such commitment. Coaches put together a team of performers they help through the show.

“This team I assembled this year is what I selfishly call my dream team,” Shelton said on Tuesday’s broadcast. He said it was the first team to have all country singers.
