Muskogee Animal Shelter employees and volunteers are hoping this Summer’s adoptions events will help thin out a packed house.
Starting Saturday, MAS will host a $25 adoption event “every week, if we can,” said shelter employee Kelly Williams. Adoptions have dried up, while strays and pet surrenders have risen, putting the shelter and animals in a critical stage, Williams said.
“If we don’t get some of these animals adopted, it’s the end of the road,” Williams said. “We’ve worked so hard here, and we absolutely do not want to go back to the way it was.”
Saturday’s event will be at Tractor Supply, 1140 W. Shawnee Bypass, said MAS volunteer Delsie Lewis. All dogs available for adoption have passed the shelter’s temperament tests.
“Tractor Supply always helps the shelter out,” Lewis said. “We’re hoping to do it there every week, but it’s not for sure, yet.”
Lewis said there would be about 20 dogs — all of whom are spayed or neutered and have their rabies shots — available Saturday. The shelter, Williams said, has nearly 60 dogs.
“We’re bursting,” Williams said. “We’ve got a woman fostering about 15 dogs just so we’ll have room here and won’t have to put any of the ones here down.”
The $25 adoption cost will be used to spay, neuter or give shots to future rescues at the shelter. Williams said donations of any kind will be accepted at the Saturday events. Dog food is especially needed.
“The people we have fostering dogs are paying for the food out of pocket,” Williams said. “They’re doing it all, so we don’t have to put any animals down.”
Williams also said the shelter’s donation account, which pays to give the animals shots as well as to be spayed and neutered, is perilously low.
“Right now, if an injured dog came in, I don’t know if we could afford to help it,” Williams said. “I hate for it to get that low, I really do. It puts us in a bind, but there’s nothing we can do.”
Lewis said rescue dogs make the best pets.
“I have always had rescue dogs,” Lewis said. “I have adopted two from the Muskogee Animal Shelter. One I had for almost 17 years, and one I have now I have had for five years. I am very pleased with them. They are loyal and loving, and I know that I saved their lives by adopting them.”
