Thursday is National Digital Literacy Day. It also marks the launch of a three-year national Ad Council campaign called “3.21 EveryoneOn,” which promotes the importance of digital literacy.
The key message is to encourage people who are limited or non-Internet users to learn how to do “one thing better online,” according to a media release.
Public libraries have long provided their communities with access to technology and the Internet.
Libraries are dedicated to promoting broadband use by investing in the Broadband Technology Opportunities Program.
In this area, Eufaula, Grove, Muskogee, Sallisaw, Tahlequah and Westville have all benefited from BTOP, according to the release.
Though these initiatives have resulted in positive outcomes in many communities, significant challenges must be overcome before access (the necessary infrastructure, technology, and skills) is within reach of all people.
Access to online information is a fundamental component of equitable access to information, a core library value. Whether learning from scratch, building beginning skills, or experimenting with the latest collaborative digital tool, libraries help patrons and students locate the best resources and help them navigate online.

The American Library Association, along with the Institute of Museum and Library Services, has been actively engaged with this campaign to showcase the work libraries do with digital literacy on March 21 and the other days of the year.
