Guns, electronics stolen from farm

Deputy: More than $20K in items taken

More than $20,000 in items was taken from a Muskogee County farmer this week, said a sheriff’s deputy.

Deputy Jeff Gragg of the Muskogee County Sheriff’s office said two to three people burglarized a home at 6501 Fern Mountain Road.

He said the farmer, Andy Barrett, went into town for lunch at about 11 a.m. Tuesday. Barrett discovered when he returned the back door had been pried open and several items had been taken, Gragg said.

A large 24-gun safe weighing approximately 500 to 600 pounds was taken with four guns and other items inside, Gragg said. Two flat-screen TVs — one at about 52 inches and another at about 36 inches — also were taken.

“That’s what hurts,” said Barrett, 59, by phone Friday. “I bought a gun safe thinking that was the place to put all my documents and guns in.”

He said several electronics items in addition to the TVs also were taken.

Barrett said his home was broken into about 20 years ago. Then, the burglars basically ransacked the home. This time he said it appeared “they knew right where they were going.”

Gragg, who was first called to the burglary with his K-9, said the people had likely been to Barrett’s home before.

“I think they cased his house,” he said.

The loss is estimated at about $20,000. Gragg said the case has been handed to county sheriff’s investigators.
