Magic Holiday Giveaway starts today

Chamber has more than 1M tickets printed for distribution

Shopping in Muskogee paid off for Jacquelyn Harris when she won the $10,000 grand prize in last year’s Magic Holiday Giveaway.

Local shopper Cody Pearce is excited to participate in this year’s giveaway.

“Ten thousand dollars would go a long way,” Pearce said.

The Greater Muskogee Area Chamber of Commerce, which sponsors the event, will distribute more than 1 million tickets for participating businesses to give away beginning today.

“The purpose is to keep shopping dollars local and generate sales tax. We hope to encourage tourism from local communities who would like to win prize money,” said Treasure McKenzie, Chamber president and CEO.

Shoppers will receive one ticket for every $10 spent. The $10,000 grand prize drawing will be held at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 19 at Arrowhead Mall. Four weekly drawings for $500 will be held starting Nov. 20.

The Magic Holiday Giveaway has been rewarding shoppers who choose to spend their money in Muskogee since 1996.

“Someone in town is going to win $10,000 because they shop here,” said Darrel Hamby, owner of Hamby TV and Appliance Warehouse.

Thanksgiving falls on Nov. 28 this year. There will be almost a week less shopping time between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

“Shopping local is more convenient, economical and the salesperson is much more knowledgeable. We have 99 percent of what everybody would want and shopping at my store you can park at the front door, walk right up and get help,” said Hamby.

Chamber Vice President Alisha Tanksley said Muskogee is a retail hub for communities to the south, “and we offer a lot of retail options that are not available for them closer to home, including a mall.”

There is no limit on how many tickets a person can receive. Around 90 local businesses are participating this year.

“If you get one ticket for a $10 purchase at Claire’s in the mall and that is the winning ticket, you get $10,000,” said Tanksley.

A winning ticket number will be published in the Muskogee Phoenix and announced on Okie Country 101.7, posted at Arrowhead Mall, and on the chamber Facebook page and www.visitmuskogee.

com.

The weekly drawing will be held at the chamber after 5 p.m. each Wednesday beginning Nov. 20. Winners must bring their ticket to the chamber by noon on the Monday following the drawing. You must be at least 18 years old to win.

The grand prize winner must bring the winning ticket to the chamber by noon Jan. 3, 2014.
