OSB Walk of Honor to lead way to new mascot statue

A brick Walk of Honor will soon lead visitors to the new statue of the Oklahoma School for the Blind’s panther mascot, thanks to the efforts of Oklahoma School for the Blind Alumni Association.

The statue is already a favorite of students who get to learn more about their mascot by touching his muscular body and fangs.

The alumni association purchased the panther as a lasting monument for the school. He took his place outside OSB’s main entrance in October.

Alumni are now selling engraved bricks to recognize teachers, family, friends, deceased staff members, students and loved ones.

The bricks are $40 each. The same individual can buy two bricks for $70 or three for $100.

Alumni Steering Committee co-chairs Jeannie Meyer and Carolyn Patocka encourage donors to become charter sponsors by making minimum donations of $50 to help purchase a bronze plaque in print and braille to commemorate the OSB Alumni Panther Walk of Honor.

Meyer is a former OSB teacher. Patocka is employed as a teacher at the school.

“The bricks started out as a tribute to honor those who have had an influence in our lives and supported the school, including our superintendents,” Patocka said.

“We are now putting out information in the student newsletter so the parents can buy bricks for their children,” Patocka said.

“Due to the interest and inquiries from the general public, we are including everyone.”

“Anyone who wants to buy a brick is certainly welcome,” Meyer said. “We’ll be glad to take their donation.”

OSB alumni plan to dedicate the panther and the Walk of Honor during their next reunion, which will be held May 24-26 on the OSB campus.

A braille and large print key will be available to help donors locate their honorees’ bricks.
