Native American students help others

Native American Student Advocacy (NASA) students at Muskogee High School and Alice Robertson Junior High have been involved in different projects during the first semester of the 2012-13 school year.

MHS students, a group of 14 to 18 students who attend meetings on Fridays, have been working diligently gathering items for Christmas for the residents of York Manor Nursing Home. A local business has donated four different, very useful items for each resident, which will be wrapped with a Christmas ornament, along with a signed card by each NASA student. They will be delivered Wednesday.

Students at ARJH are focused on three areas of interest: The ROAD — Character; Career Planning — related to Common Core; and Cultural Identity — “Who You Are.” During the first nine weeks, eighth graders Fletcher Kinsey and Bailey Tull, along with seventh grader Gabby Gatzman, were nominated and then selected to be ROAD winners.

Field trips included tours of Wheeler Metals, Yaffe Metals and Oklahoma Interpak. Students were able to see the relationship between the things they are learning and how it applies in the work place and to common core.

Approximately 12 to 20 students attend weekly meetings where Native American culture is taught, with emphasis on character and life skills. Five of the male students are learning to drum and sing in the powwow traditions, while several are studying the Muscogee (Creek) language. NASA advisors are Susan Roberts at MHS and Jerrod Adair at ARJH.
