Tahlequah police are investigating a recent burglary at a cafe where more than $1,300 was reported stolen.
Melvin Hendrix, who runs the Out West Cafe at 2084 W. Choctaw St. with his brother, said he thinks the burglar or burglars knew exactly what they wanted.
“They went straight from the back door, straight to the office,” he said. “They didn’t bother the cash register or do any damage to anything else.”
Hendrix said he doesn’t typically leave money lying out overnight — and he won’t from now on.
“There’s a new system in place, I’ll tell you that,” he said. “I’m pissed off about it, but what can you do. Whoever did it had to know something, because I don’t usually leave money here at night.”
Tahlequah Police Department spokesman Brad Robertson said detectives have followed up on leads but have made no arrests.
“They’ve said they’re actively investigating this,” he said. “There are still leads they are wanting to follow up on.”
Robertson said police ask the public to keep their eyes open for strange activity.
“We just ask people in general, I mean, don’t put yourself in harm’s way, don’t get hurt, but get a tag number and a description if you see anything unusual,” he said. “It’s the same as it’s been for 100 years. Don’t put yourself in danger, but if you can get us a tag number and a description, it can help us a whole lot.”
