Defense attorneys continued to paint a picture Monday of Elbert “Lee” Meeks celebrating his 21st birthday the night 2-year-old Ja’Cion Logan was killed.
Meeks is charged with first-degree felony murder in the toddler’s death. Assistant Muskogee County District Attorney Jason Perez has told jurors that Meeks had a “beef” with another teenager, went to the house Logan was at and accidentally shot the 2-year-old during an attempted break in Dec. 21, 2011.
Meeks’ attorneys, Roger Hilfiger and Andrew Hayes, called multiple friends and family of Meeks who told jurors they were with Meeks the night of the shooting.
Meeks, his attorneys have said, was drinking and talking to girls via text messages and social media.
Logan was shot once in the head four nights before Christmas in the 1100 block of Indianapolis Street at about 7:20 p.m.
Meeks’ sister, Jasminne Anderson, said Meeks was on her laptop in Anderson’s room when she left for work some time after 6 p.m.
Testimony from a number of Meeks’ friends and family detailed Meeks’ version of events in the hours after the shooting.
Meeks’ aunt, Teresa Price, testified that Meeks called her and asked her to come pick him up in Muskogee. She said Meeks was afraid to turn himself into Muskogee police.
Price, who lives in Tulsa, told Meeks she wouldn’t come pick him up, but could meet him in Coweta. Meeks’ cousin, Michael Johnson, said Meeks, who was drinking at this point, asked him for a ride to Coweta to meet his aunt.
Johnson said he spoke to Meeks, who “seemed normal,” and said Meeks didn’t act out of the ordinary on the drive to Coweta.
“He never mentioned (a homicide) or anything,” Johnson testified.
Yet, according to previous testimony, Meeks had already been notified he was a suspect in Logan’s death. And despite testimony detailing Meeks’ attitude and parts of his itinerary, no one has come forward with an explanation for where Meeks was at the time of the shooting.
Defense testimony begins again at 9 a.m. today. Closing arguments are expected this afternoon.
