Published May 18, 2008 11:29 pm - Jack Ellis Epperson, Sr. 1928 - 2008 Jack Ellis Epperson, Sr. (PaPa Jack) departed this life to be with his Savior Saturday, May 17, 2008, after a long, courageous fight. He was born in Wagoner County, north of Okay, Oklahoma on April 26, 1928 to Joe and Bette (Phipps) Epperson. All of his life was spent in Wagoner County, graduating from Okay High School in 1946, where he lettered in baseball and basketball. He also participated in drama, starring in four plays during his high school years. He was an active Four-H member, showing pigs and calves and excelling in handicrafts. He was Wagoner County Four-H President for two years, and during his senior year, he won a trip to the National Four-H Congress in Chicago for his handicraft projects. He married his high school sweetheart Evelyn June Posey December 29, 1947 and they have resided in Wagoner County for over sixty years. He owned and operated a rural milk route in Wagoner and Muskogee Counties for seven years, drove an Okay School bus for two years, worked for Jack Harrison Tires in Muskogee for five years, and retired from Fansteel metals in Muskogee after thirty years of service. During this time, he also owned and operated a cattle/horse ranch southeast of Wagoner off highway 16, where he raised and sold quarter horses. Also, he raced quarter horses for many years. He was always busy working, but not too busy to help his family, friends, and neighbors, ever sharing his knowledge of horses with others, and even finding time to help coach little league baseball. He is survived by his wife Evelyn June of the home, his daughter Marilea Bennett, her son Ivan (Tuffy) Bennett and his wife Christy and their two daughters Molly and Emily, all of Wagner, his son Jack Epperson, Jr. and his wife Kathy, their children Charity Cooper of Fairbanks, Alaska, Carrie Epperson and her children Dylan and Ashley, Ali Dawn Clayton and her husband Michael and their three children, Trey, Madison and Victoria, son Greg Hunt and his wife Amanda and their two children Noah and Josiah, daughter Sarah Brackman and her husband Jason, all of Bloomburg, Texas, three nephews, Dwight Epperson and wife Wanda of Wagoner, Danny Joe Epperson and wife Retha of Okay, and Ken Epperson and wife, Judy of Broken Arrow, and two nieces, Judy Hoyt and husband Handford of Kingfisher, Oklahoma and Susan Hester of Ada, Oklahoma, several cousins, and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Lelia Morgan and Zuma Gosnell, brothers William Epperson, Columbus Epperson and Garrett Epperson. Visitation will be from 9:30 AM to 8:00 PM, Monday, May 19, 2008 at Hersman-Nichols Funeral Home in Wagoner. A celebration of his life will be held at Three Rivers Cemetery near Okay, Oklahoma at 2:00 PM, Tuesday, May 20, 2008 with the Reverend Larry Lashley officiating. Honorary pallbearers are Dean Echols, Dwight Epperson, Danny Epperson, Ronnie Cowden, Donald Thayer, and Bill Barnett. The family thanks Hometown Hospice Family and the many friends who have made this journey bearable. The family prefers donations to the Alzheimer’s Association in lieu of flowers.
