Published May 20, 2008 11:01 pm - Dr. Virgil Dale Matthews 1919 -- 2008 Dr. Virgil Dale Matthews, 89, longtime Muskogee physician, answered his Savior’s call, Monday, May 19, 2008. Family and friends will gather to celebrate his life at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, May 22, 2008 at St. Paul United Methodist Church with Reverend Bill Bailey and Senator Tom Coburn M.D. officiating. Dr. Matthews was born in Muskogee, OK, February 8, 1919 to Virgil Dale & Hannah (McKinney) Matthews. He graduated from Muskogee Central High School and the University of Oklahoma. After receiving his doctorate from the University of Tennessee, he served 3 years as a physician in the United States Army. He married the love of his life, Carolyn Herring on June 10, 1944. Dr. Matthews worked as a family physician in private practice until 1994, delivering over 8000 babies during his career. Until recently, he assisted in operating the largest medical clinic for those that needed assistance at Muskogee County Health Department. He received the A. H. Robbins award from the Oklahoma State Medical Association for community service. Dr. Matthews took his civic responsibilities to heart serving on the city council, the Muskogee School Board for 32 years and was the founding father of the Muskogee Public School Foundation. He was a member of Bethany Presbyterian Church, serving as a deacon and elder and a Senior High Youth Sponsor. He taught Sunday school classes for many years writing over 1000 pages of lessons. Dr. Matthews was currently a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Fort Gibson. Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Carolyn; son, Stephen Matthews; son & daughter-in-law, Robert & Mary Beth Thompson; daughter & son-in-law, Carole & Mike Ashby; daughter-in-law, Ann Matthews; grandchildren: Kirsten, Hillary, Graham, Tyler, Lance, Lisa Kaye and Lauren and numerous great grandchildren and his brother & sister-in-law, Robert & Elwyn Matthews. Dr. Matthews was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters, Betty Thompson and Jean Bolton and his son, Richard Matthews. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the First Presbyterian Church of Fort Gibson, 228 N. Lee, Fort Gibson, OK 74434 or the Dr. Virgil Matthews Scholarship Fund, Muskogee High School, 202 W. Broadway, Muskogee OK 74401. Dr. Matthews was blessed with his loving wife, Carolyn of 63 years. Together they built a loving and caring relationship for each other and their family. No sacrifice was too great for his wife, Carolyn, his family, his church, his community and his profession. He will be missed by all those whose lives he has touched. The family has entrusted Bradley Family Funeral Service of Muskogee with the arrangements.
