Sherman Huston “Bud” Newman

1940-2013

— Sherman Huston “Bud” Newman, age 73, of Haskell, OK passed away Saturday, December 14, 2013. He was born November 25, 1940 in Porter, OK to Lonnie Huston and Alva (Arnold) Newman.

Sherman was the youngest of five children born to his parents. His twin sister, Shirley Brown, is 15 minutes older. Sherman was his given name, but is widely known outside of Porter, OK as “Bud”. He grew up in Porter and graduated from Porter schools. He loved baseball and played short stop on the Porter team.

Sherman married a Haskell girl, Nedra Jeanne Barnes on June 7, 1963, and they recently celebrated their “50th” wedding anniversary.

He was drafted into the United States Marine Corps and proudly served his country from 1966-1968. While serving he earned the rank of Sergeant. He served in Vietnam at Khe Sanh and other locations near the DMZ zone as an 81 Mortar man with the 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Division. He currently served with the Haskell American Legion Post 56 “Honor Guard”. He took deep pride in being able to pay his final respects to the men and women who had served our country with honor. The members of Post 56 have participated in 165 funerals this year. He was a past commander of the Post 56 and was a member of the executive board.

Sherman spent 30 years as a carpenter building homes and working on churches in Haskell and Muskogee then more recently served as a rural mail carrier for The Haskell US Post Office, but had to quit a few years ago because of his health. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Haskell. Sherman had a generous and kind heart, doing many deeds for others, but never wanting the spotlight. In years past he was an avid supporter of the children at Haskell Public Schools. He served as president of the Booster Club for many years, which covered academics, band,  athletics, FFA, and 4-H. He always wanted to be sure ample money was collected for the Haskell kids in the Muskogee Livestock sale ring, and joined others in collecting money for the sale.

Sherman loved to travel and went on many trips taking his family, or his in-laws, nieces and nephews. They all reminisce today about the excursions, and how much fun and how patient their “Uncle Bud” was. He had no children of his own, but loved his nieces and nephews as if they were his. This included his family and his wife’s family. He always wanted the best for all of them and was there as a mentor, a friend, and as their “Uncle Bud”.

Sherman is preceded in death by his parents, sister Ruth, and brothers Floyd and Kennith. He leaves behind to cherish his memories, his beloved wife of 50 years, Nedra. Also to cherish his memories is his twin sister, Shirley Brown and husband Willie, as well as several nieces and nephews.
