Jeannie Thompson

1924 - 2012

Esther Jean “Jeannie” Irwin Thompson, age 88, passed away on November 5, 2012. Jeannie was born in Lawrence, Kansas on March 31, 1924, the first of Albert Bristow “Popeye” Irwin and Amy Mae Irwin’s two daughters. Soon thereafter Jeannie and family moved to Oklahoma, the place Jeannie called home for most of her life. In 1942, Jeannie married Daniel “Pop” Thompson, her lifelong sweetheart and husband of 62 years, in Victoria, Texas while Dan was stationed at Foster Air Force Base. Together Jeannie and Dan opened an antique shop called The Whatnot Shelf in 1970. Four years later, Jeannie and Dan founded The Colonies, Oklahoma City’s first antique emporium.  The Colonies thrived until 1981, when Dan and Jeannie sold it as a going concern. After the sale of The Colonies, Jeannie continued to deal in antiques through The Whatnot Shelf, liquidating estates until 2008. Preceding Jeannie in death are her parents, her sister Joan Coit, and her husband Dan. Jeannie is survived by her two daughters and their spouses, Linda and John Thompson and Deborah and Jim Bryson; her grandchildren John, Lauran and Hawk Thompson; Jeff, Daniel, Caleb and Casey Camp; Terry and Ronna Bryson and Debbie Sumter; twelve great-grandchildren; many beloved nieces and nephews; and the countless friends she made throughout the course of her life. Services in memory of Jeannie Thompson will take place at 2 pm on Saturday, November 10 at Epworth United Methodist Church (NW 19th and Douglas). In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, Grand Central Station, PO Box 4777, NY NY 10163-4777 or online at: http://www2.michaeljfox.org/goto/jeannie (all online donations will be matched until 12/31/12).
