Hope Smith Mayes

1922 - 2013

— With sorrow, we tell you of the death of our mother, Hope Smith Mayes, born on September 2, 1922 to Junie Smith and Elizabeth Meigs Smith. She died on April 3, 2013 in Clearwater, Florida, at 90 years of age.

Hope lived her young years in Park Hill, Oklahoma. She had the privilege of learning at the knee of her grandfather, Return Robert Meigs, a wealth of history of the Cherokees as he was the grandson of Chief John Ross. She loved the stories he told and in her later years it was her goal to preserve them for her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Her sons were bon in Tahlequah and her daughters were born in Muskogee, Oklahoma.

She was predeceased by her husband, Bill Mayes, and two of her children: Bill Mayes, Jr. and Melissa Mayes Shahan. She is survived by one daughter, Jane Mayes Stansell of California, and two sons, Robin Mayes of Texas and Carlos Mayes of Florida. One brother, Robert J. Smith also predeceased our mother.

She is survived by her sisters, Fannie Livingston, Elizabeth Hickey and Mary Ziegenfuss, and Mary Margaret Smith, her brother’s wife, all of Muskogee. Also surviving her is her husband’s sister, Patricia Holderby of Tahlequah.

In support of her husband’s calling as a missionary, Hope traveled across the United States and into Mexico. She made many life-long friends and gained wonderful experiences. Nevertheless, Oklahoma was her home. She was a life-long scholar and completed her Masters Degree at the age of 69 years. She retired as a hospital Medical Records Director at age 73. She saw the best in life and had a ready laugh for the humor she found in everyday interactions.

She is survived by eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren, each of whom were so special in her thoughts and prayers.

Anyone who knew our mother and would like to share your thoughts with us may write to Jane Stansell, P.O. Box 187, Forest Ranch, CA 95942 or e-mail: gramlaw@pacbell.net
