Donald Lee Moore


Donald Lee Moore was born October 31, 1930 in rural Wagoner County to Willie Ellis Moore and Ada Vanbrunt Moore and departed from this life November 21, 2013 at Hillcrest Hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Donald grew up and lived all of his life in Wagoner. He served in the 1st Division, 3rd Battalion, 7th Cavalry Headquarters Company in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and was one of only nine men out of one hundred thirty-dive men in his unit to return alive.

He worked at McDonnell Douglas and Spartan Aeronautics in Tulsa before starting his auto repair business, Don’s Garage, in 1971 and retired in 2010 after 39 years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Wagoner where he served as a former chair of the Building & Grounds Committee. He was a citizen of the Cherokee Nation and enjoyed O.U. football, his motorcycle and tractors and working on cars.

Don is survived by his wife of 65 years, Betty Lois Barney Moore; his son, Rick Moore and wife, Donna of Wagoner; daughters, Donna Byas and husband Steve of Norman, Oklahoma, Sherri Speyrer and husband Gary of Madisonville, Louisiana and Patti Moore of Wagoner, Oklahoma; one granddaughter, Kelsey Dawn Moore of Wagoner; five grandsons, Jared Speyrer and wife Monica of Bossier City, Louisiana, Joshua Speyrer and wife Anna of Jackson, Mississippi, Jason Byas of Norman, Oklahoma, Brett Smith and wife Connie of Muskogee, Oklahoma and Blair Smith of Norman, Oklahoma; two great grandchildren, Caleb Kestler and Nolan Smith both of Muskogee, Oklahoma; one brother, James E. Moore of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma and many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, November 26, 2013 in the First Baptist Church with the Reverends Mark Pointer and Steve Dennis officiating. Military graveside services will follow at Pioneer Cemetery under the direction of Hersman-Nichols Funeral Home.
