James Thomas “Jim” Elk

1936-2012

— James Thomas “Jim” Elk, 75, a full blood Cherokee, passed away on Friday, July 13, 2012 at Jack C. Montgomery VA Medical Center.  He was born on October 14, 1936 to Turner and Quatie Elk around Marble City, Oklahoma where he grew up.  He had two sisters, Laura and Sarah and one brother, Boisdarc Elk. Jim joined the U.S. Air Force to see the world.  He is a Korean War Veteran.  While living in California he enjoyed a career as an actor.  He loved life, loved to joke around and make people laugh.  He enjoyed fishing and working with his hands. At the age of 74, Jim went back to school at ICTC for carpentry. He was the oldest student and his classmates called him “Grandpa.” He graduated with high honors and was a member of the National Technical Honor Society.

He was a mighty warrior for God, always praying and touching people’s lives.  He will be greatly missed and always loved by family and friends.

Jim is survived by his wife of 22 years, Carol Elk; two daughters, Lydia Wilson and Sharon Ballentine; grandkids, Bob Baker (Megan), Shannon Turner (Todd), William Hergott (Amanda), Daniel Hergott, Stephenie Finney (Rickey) and Jason Ballentine (Brandy);  great-grandkids, Dylan O’Connor, Alicia O’Connor, Alora O’Connor, Tori and Trey Turner, Kayla Hergott, Corey Reynolds, Colette Shatto (Nick), Jessica and  Crystal Brucker, Taylor, Dalton, Jerlynn Ballentine; two great-great-grandkids, Syrenity and Rhylen Shatto; nieces and nephews, Lula (Jim), Charles, Tommy, Elsie, Emma, and Laura Elk, including brothers and sisters-in-law; great-nieces, great-nephews and many more family and friends too numerous to mention here.

Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 18, 2012 at Church 4:18, 2710 S. Cherokee, Muskogee with Pastor Kevin Jones officiating. Interment will follow in Fort Gibson National Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jim Winner, Jack Wilson, Todd Turner, William Hergott, Jake Elk and Dylan O’Connor.  Honorary pallbearers are Bobby Baker, Daniel Hergott, Charles Elk and Tommy Elk.
