Dorothy Duncan Hays

1920-2013

Dorothy Duncan Hays, 93, died December 17, 2013 in Tulsa. She was born in Muskogee, Oklahoma on September 16, 1920 to Louis W. and Vera Green Duncan.

Dorothy attended Muskogee public schools and graduated from Central High School in 1938. She then studied for two years at Gunston Hall in Washington D.C. before transferring to the University of Oklahoma, where she became a member of Pi Beta Phi and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English in 1942.

On May 4, 1943 she married Arthur Graham (“Bill”) Hays. They had three children. Dorothy was a dedicated mother and tirelessly supported her children’s many activities. Faith and family always came first. She and Bill joined the Sequoyah Outing Club on the Illinois River in 1948 and Dorothy remained a member through 2012. Her sixty-five summers at Sequoyah Club included many unforgettable and happy events with lifelong friends.

Dorothy was a member of First Baptist Church from the time she was a small girl until she left Muskogee in 2010. Her civic and social activities in Muskogee included membership in P.E.O, Keystone Study Club, Junior Service League, Muskogee Garden Study Club, and volunteer work in the church Food Pantry.

Just before her 90th birthday, Dorothy moved to Montereau, a retirement community in Tulsa. The move proved to be a good decision, and new friends along with excellent care made Dorothy’s final years peaceful and fulfilling.

Dorothy’s long life was a beautiful example of grace, humility, and generosity, coupled with a strong and enduring faith in God.

She was predeceased by her parents and husband of fifty-three years, Bill. She is survived by two sons, Arthur Graham (Bill) Hays, Jr. of Oklahoma City; Louis Duncan Hays (wife Susan Bowman Hays) of Tahlequah, OK; one daughter, Dotty Hays Hendren (husband Michael Hendren) of Russellville, AR; four grandchildren, Elizabeth (husband Tim) Crump, Plano, TX, Sara Hendren (husband Brian Funck), Cambridge, MA, Michael Hays Hendren, Manchester, NH, and David Duncan Hendren, Los Angeles, CA; six great-grandchildren, Grace, Olivia, Anna, Graham, Freddie, and Malcolm. She also is survived by her sister, Mrs. Robert D. (Teet) Reynolds, Springfield, MO; two nieces, Ann Hicks and Patricia (husband Michael) Manzardo, of Springfield, MO; two nephews, James Buchanan III (wife Becky) of Oklahoma City, and John Reynolds of Springfield, MO.

A memorial service will be held at the First Baptist Church at 1 pm on January 7, 2014. A private interment ceremony at Greenhill Cemetery will precede the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the First Baptist Church, 111 S. 7th St., Muskogee Oklahoma 74401, or to a charity of your choice.

The family has entrusted Bradley Family Funeral Service of Muskogee with the arrangements. Friends may send condolences to the family at www.bradleyfuneralservice.com
