Richard Ray Head

1937-2014

Richard Head, age 76, of Checotah, Oklahoma passed away on Wednesday, January 1st, 2014 at his home in Checotah while surrounded by the love and comfort of his family. Richard was born to Dick and Gracie (Lowe) Head on December 19th, 1937 in Warner, Oklahoma.

Richard grew up in Warner where he received his early education. He enlisted in the United States Army on June 30, 1962 where he served four years of active duty. After his discharge from the Army, Richard went to work as a mechanic at the Warner Texaco Truck Stop where he remained for a total of 18 years. He retired from McIntosh County District #1 after 12 years as a grader/operator and mechanic.

Richard spent most of his life in and around the Warner/Muskogee area. He married Sharlet Nell (Rock) on May 28th, 1963 in Stigler, OK. Richard was member of the Warner Volunteer Fire Department. He was the Awanas Leader for years at the Warner First Baptist. Richard enjoyed coaching baseball and he was the team coach for the Checotah 5th and 6th grade baseball team. He worked for a number of years at the Muskogee V.A. Medical Center and was a member of the Blackjack School Alumni. Outside of the love he had for the kids and his family, Richard got the most enjoyment from his #1 hobby which was fishing. You could almost always find him day dreaming about fishing. Even at the very near end of his life and while it was necessary for him to be confined to his bed at home, you could often see him going through the motions of casting his rod and reel. The thought of having the opportunity to go fishing was one of the greatest pleasures he had during the last days of his life. Even though all of us will miss him dearly, each of us know that if there is a fishing hole in Heaven, he is there trying to teach someone how to make that great catch. As our days come and go here on earth, one day each of us will have the opportunity to sit alongside Richard once again. Richard was preceded in death by his Father, Dick Maple Head and his mother, Gracie Mae (Lowe) Head. One brother, Billy Head and one sister, Ruth Rowland. His survivors include his wife, Sharlet Head of the home. Two sons; Richard Lee Head and James Wade Head both of Checotah. Three daughters, Krystale Rae Head and Charlotte “Michele” Head, both of Checotah and Sandra Coppin and husband Tim of Elm Grove near Muskogee. Four brothers, Don Head and wife Betty, James and wife Edith, and Gene Head, all of Warner, Oklahoma, Lonnie Head and wife Julie of South Bend, Indiana. Three sisters, Carolyn Casey of Muskogee, Linda Driggers and husband Frank of Siloam Springs, Arkansas, Yvonne Patton and husband Rick of Abbeville, Alabama. Eight grandchildren, Jeremiah Head, Ruby Head, Lucy Head, Watie Head, Austin McCarter, Ella Hyslop, Gerran and Hank Coppin. Numerous nieces, nephews, others relatives and a host of wonderful friends. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 AM Wednesday, January 8, 2014 at the Warner First Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the Bennett Cemetery at Warner, OK. Arrangements are under the direction of Shipman’s Muskogee Cremation & Funeral Service, Muskogee, Oklahoma
