Herbert Hoover Smith, 84 year old lifetime Checotah resident, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, on Saturday, December 22, 2012. On Friday, November 23, 1928, he was born in a log cabin on the family homestead in Checotah to Arthur and Ethel Winkle Smith. Herbert attended Carr Creek Elementary, Checotah Junior High and was a proud 1947 graduate of Checotah High School. After graduation he went to work for McIntosh County. He met and later married Freda Hatley. Herbert went to work for Frame Lumber as Manager in 1958, working side by side with Bob and Skeet Frame. In 1980, he built a new home on the old home place where he raised Chester White pigs, attended a garden and was known to give veggie’s, berries and even peaches from his peach tree away. At the close of business at Frame Lumber on Saturday, December 1, 1990, he retired after 32 years. He was a devoted member of the First Free Will Baptist Church where he was a Sunday school teacher for 50 years and as a Deacon for 33 years. After the death of Freda, Herbert married Lura Mae White on Saturday, January 2, 1982 in Checotah. They enjoyed traveling with friends to Branson and Eureka Springs. He loved gospel music and would sing with the gospel music group at the nursing home. One of the greatest joys in Herbert’s life was leading a 95 year old man to the Lord at the nursing home. He will be remembered as a wonderful husband, dad, friend and would help anyone in need. His heart was made of Gold.
