Dr. Otherine Toliver

1949 - 2013

— Dr. Otherine Toliver went to glory on January 23, 2013 in Okmulgee, OK.  She was born June 25, 1949 in Muskogee, OK to Samuel A and Luvenia Scott Graham.  She was the second child born to the couple of three children.

Dr. Toliver was a faithful member of Macedonia Baptist Church in Muskogee, OK and played the piano for several churches in the Muskogee area.

Her education began at Langston Elementary School, Sadler Junior High School and later the historical “Manual Training High” graduating May, 1967.  Otherine started receiving “titles” at a very young age.  In middle school, her first title was  “Miss Sadler Junior High School”. In high school, she placed first in speech tournaments all over the state.  The straight “A” students was crowned Miss Manual XXII on October 19, 1966, and finally,  Otherine applied for the Ford Foundation Scholarship and won The National Achievement Scholarship ( NASP) to the University of Oklahoma.

During her tenure at the University of Oklahoma, she pledged the Epsilon Lambda Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, Inc., April 19, 1969 and completed her pre-medicine major in three (3) years and went to Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri.  There was only four black students in her graduating class at Washington University.  

Barnes Hospital is where Otherine spent her next three years specializing in Psychiatry .  Her internship was done at Michael Reese Hospital during the next two years, then back to St. Louis to complete her hospital residency.

While in St. Louis, Mo., Otherine met and married William (Bill) Toliver in 1978.  They had a commuter marriage for two months.  Bill stayed in St. Louis and finished his MBA specializing in labor relations and Otherine moved to Dallas, TX.  In 1980, Otherine later moved to Muskogee working for the Mental Health Center then started her private practice as a sole practitioner in Psychiatry in Tulsa for the next 12 years.

Otherine worked with the elderly and specialized in “Pain Control”, she recorded the Psalms backed by music as part of therapy.

In March 24, 1989, two successive 3yr contracts were accepted to the Memorial Hospital in Okmulgee, OK.  She received a grant to open the clinic and started the Geriatric Behavioral Treatment (for emotional symptoms and behavioral complications of the senior adult age 55 or above) for Eastern Oklahoma, H.O.P.E, Program.)  The unit consisted of 17 beds and a tentative open date was set for the summer of 1989.

While working at the H.O.P.E. Unit, Otherine began working with the elderly in the area of Pain Therapy and Control and saw patients in Broken Arrow.  She became an ordained Minister through Overcomers Fellowship Church in Broken Arrow and did family counseling at Overcomers Church through 1993. From 1993 through 1996, Otherine began seeing patients in a Sapulpa office until she retired on a full disability.

Otherine was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Marva.  She leaves to cherish her memory, her husband, William (Bill) of the home; one brother, Samuel Jr. (Julia) of Tulsa, OK; special sister, Sandra K. Glover, Tulsa, OK; her brother-in-law, George(Dorothy) Houston, TX ; her mother-in-law, Katherine Toliver, Houston, TX; nephews TJ, Darrell and Sam III; nieces Diona, Courtney and Marva; host of uncles, aunties, and friends.

A service of memory will be conducted Saturday, February 2, 2013, 2:00 p.m., Precious Memories Chapel, House of Winn Funeral Home, Okmulgee, OK.  Cremation to follow.

Visitation will be Friday 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.
