Howard Hugh Munsell

1925 - 2013

— Howard Hugh Munsell, 87 year old Checotah resident, passed away Thursday, February 7, 2013 in Muskogee.

He was born on Wednesday, December 23, 1925 to Harvey Otto and Mattie Jewell (Neyland) Munsell in Lyton Springs, Texas. He grew up in the Lockhart and Austin Texas area. At the age of 17, he joined The United States Navy in Austin, Texas during the latter part of WWII. He was honorably discharged Tuesday, January 8, 1946 in Corpus Christi, Texas. While still in the Navy, he married the love of his life, Ms. Vera Treadwell on Saturday, February 10, 1945 in Kingsville, TX. They moved to Arizona for a brief time before moving back to Checotah in 1959.

Howard worked on dairy farms in both Arizona and Oklahoma. Back in Oklahoma, he went to work at Insulation Services making insulated pipe fittings. He worked construction for a short period before becoming a janitor for Checotah Public Schools and later Connors State College where he retired in 1983. Howard was then able to begin his prison ministry and song writing. He loved to jot down poetic verses, creating beautiful songs and playing his guitar.

He is preceded in death by his loving wife Vera on Thursday, May 12, 2011; parents; five brothers; five sisters; oldest son Fred J. Munsell; grandson Shane Munsell and son-in-law Harvey Riggs.

Howard is lovingly survived by his children Anna Williams and her husband Mendel of Bolivar, MO, Howard Douglas Munsell and his wife Connie of Muskogee, OK, Diane Riggs of Muldrow, OK and Dwight David Munsell and his wife Nikki of Muskogee, OK; grandchildren, Darren Harrill and his wife Sherrill of Bolivar, MO, Sonya Munsell of Tulsa, OK, Rodney Harrill and his wife Rebecca of Cottonwood Heights, Utah, Shelly Parfait and her husband Tre of Nashville, TN, Jerry Riggs and his wife Natlin, Billy Riggs and his wife Johnna all of Muldrow, OK, Donald Joe Riggs and his wife Sherry of Montgomery AL, Tonya Munsell of Checotah, OK, Tiffany Munsell, Chetan Munsell and Taylor Munsell, Kyle Munsell and his wife Jackie all of Muskogee, OK; great-grandchildren, Rachel, Jared, Hunter, Derrick, Lauren, Jamie, Julia, Trevor, Travis, Conner, Alisyn, Wisper, Zackery, Haley, Austin and Wesley; daughter-in-law, Gay Munsell of Tulsa; two brothers-in-law, Arthur Jewell Treadwell of Desoto, TX, Willie Lemont Treadwell and his wife Thelma of Kellyville, OK; two sisters, Nancy Crowhurst of Houston, TX and Louise Rogers of Nixon, TX. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, other extended family and a host of friends.

Viewing will be 1 PM to 5 PM Sunday, February 10, 2013 at Garrett Family Funeral Home with Howard’s family greeting friends from 2 PM-4 PM. Graveside services with military honors will be held at 11:30 AM Monday, February 11, 2013 in Greenlawn Cemetery in Checotah, with Reverend Kelly Payne officiating. Committal prayers and Interment will follow under the personal direction of John Garrett. Darren Harrill, Rodney Harrill, Jerry Riggs, Billy Riggs, D.J. Riggs, Chetan Munsell and Kyle Munsell will honor their Grandfather as casket bearers. Military honors will be rendered by the United States Navy Funeral Honor Guard.
