Wilma Criner Washington


— Wilma Criner Washington was born in Haskell on January 9, 1919. Her aunt Ethel Criner-Barr encouraged her to seek education at an early age. Wilma graduated from Haskell's Booker T. Washington High School in 1938. She enrolled at Langston University and while pursuing her studies met George Washington, an All-American football player. They married in 1942.

The couple was in the vanguard when they enrolled at the newly integrated O.U. They received master’s degrees in 1952. Wilma taught at Old Agency School, Moton High School and in the Muskogee School District. She retired in 1981, her husband passed in 1985 and she moved to Wichita in 1988.

She was active in Antioch Baptist Church, Silhouette Club, Matron's Circle and Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority.

Wilma is survived by Mildred June Faucette-Huff and Heather Kilat, of Wichita, Kansas; Dellena, Lou and Ian Holton, of the San Francisco Bay Area; siblings, Earnestine Criner Elliott and Mark Criner and son-in-law Larry Huff, all of Wichita, Kansas, and a host of nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Washington passed on January 29, 2013 and is interred next to her husband George at Memorial Park Cemetery.
