Donald Wayne North passed from this life September 13, 2013 at the age of 75 with his loving family, Hospice family and voluntary personal nurse Rita Taylor-Church at his bedside. Donald was born March 5, 1938 in Saline County Missouri to Eugene and Alice Paxton North. As a teenager Donald lived in Hulbert, OK, where his parents owned a cafe and spent his time riding horses, fishing, and hunting. His father was a naval career man and the family moved to Louisiana when Donald was 18. There he met and married Mildred Mitchel, making his home in Avondale, Louisiana for many years. He retired from Avondale Shipyards as a ship welder, where he was nicknamed “Gater.” When not at work he could be found hunting gaters in the swamps. Donald always loved the outdoors and often worked 2 jobs. He returned to OK after evacuating to Fort Gibson to stay with his Hulbert and Fort Gibson teenage friend, Wayne Church and wife Rita during Hurricane Katrina. He was loved and adored by his two daughters, grandson and granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, brother Eugene and wife Mildred. He is survived by daughters Donna North, Westwego, LA and Sandra North, Fort Gibson OK, grandson Daniel North, Avondale, LA, granddaughter Amanda Richter, Fort Gibson, OK, sister Ruth North, Nowata, OK, and close friend who was like a son to him, Richard Brewer of Fort Gibson, OK.
Donald’s final resting place will be with his mother at Tahlequah City Cemetery and the swamps of Louisiana. A memorial service for the family and friends will be at a later date. The family wishes to thank Carter Home Health Hospice and Oxford Home Health for caring for Donald and a special thanks to Rita Taylor-Church for the hours of voluntary nursing and wound care over the past 4 years. The family has entrusted Serenity Funerals and Crematory, Tulsa, OK, to care for their loved one.
