Sylvia Wilcox


Sylvia Wilcox, 75, of Grand Island died Monday, September 16, 2013 at her home surrounded by her family.

Memorial service will be 11:00AM, Friday, September 20, 2013 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Grand Island with Pastor Jack Gillam officiating. Visitation with the family will be Thursday from 5-7:30 PM at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home. There will be no viewing as Sylvia was cremated, and inurnment will follow at a later date. Memorials can be given to the family for later designation. Online condolences may be left at

Sylvia was born January 17, 1938 at Cookson, OK to Thurman and Ethel (Risley) Brown. She grew up in Cookson and attended school in Braggs, OK. After school, she worked at Ruth Warren’s Grocery.  

On January 23, 1973 she was united in marriage to Richard Wilcox in Lincoln, KS. The couple lived in various places while Richard worked construction, but then settled in Grand Island for the majority of their married life. Sylvia kept busy raising her family. In 2000, she started working for Sam’s as a People Greeter. She loved her job and was recognized often as the “Sam’s Club Greeter.” She cherished the customers who became more like friends through the years. She also enjoyed reading, puzzles, baking — especially bread, gardening, and camping. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

Sylvia is survived by her husband, Richard; son, Tony Washington of Grand Island; daughter, Debra Washington-Morgan of Grand Island; daughter, Robin (Doug) Pollak of Seward, NE; daughter, Angela Washington of Grand Island; son, Brian (Lisa) Wilcox of Fremont, NE; daughter, Janet May of Herington, KS; daughter-in-law, Gerri Washington of Grand Island, NE; 18 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; sister-in-law, Connie (Willis) Skinner of Leawood, KS; brother-in-law, Lyle (Jean) Wilcox of McCook, NE.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Ed Brown; sisters, Elda Strong, Beulah Ferguson, Pauline Friday; and son, James “Danny” Washington.
